Me & My Dad: A Story Through the Lens

Black and white photo of an older man in a formal vest and tie, standing in a doorway with a serious expression.

The First Camera

My photography journey started with a gift, my first camera, bought by my dad. It wasn’t anything fancy, but to me, it felt like magic in a box. From the moment I held it, I was hooked. What I didn’t realise then was that he wasn’t just handing me a camera — he was opening the door to a whole life we’d share.

On the Road Together

Two photographers kneeling on grass, taking pictures with professional cameras.

We worked side by side, travelling the country shooting weddings and events. Early mornings, long drives, late nights — all blurred into one constant rhythm of lenses, light, and laughter. He had a way with people, disarming them in seconds. I watched and learned. He wasn’t just teaching me how to frame a shot — he was showing me how to see people.

The Stories He Captured

Dad had an incredible eye and a career full of stories. He once photographed John Hurt for Hello! magazine — I remember him coming back from that shoot absolutely buzzing. He also covered the Irish soccer team, capturing moments that still pop up in archives now and then.

But perhaps his most talked-about work came from his coverage of the infamous Athy bank robbery. His images from that day went around the world — raw, urgent, and impossible to ignore. Suddenly, this quiet man from Athy had global eyes on him.

“He wasn’t just teaching me how to frame a shot, he was showing me how to see people.”

A Love for Place and People

Photography was never just a job for Dad; it was storytelling, it was community, it was life. He poured that passion into two books: Achill Voices and Images of Ireland: Athy Town. Both were love letters in their own way, to the places, the people, and the history that shaped him..

Learning the Craft

I went on to study photography in the UK, earning a BA Honours degree in Editorial Photography. No classroom could match the education I got standing beside him, frame after frame, we kept working together until the very end. Losing my father was like losing a limb, but I still feel him beside me every time I lift a camera. Every photo I take carries a bit of his legacy.

A Legacy That Lives On

The journey we shared through photography wasn’t just about the work — it was about a bond, a shared vision, and a love passed from father to son.
